ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam Day - Scheduled for the week of May 13, 2008, ACVO and Pet Health Systems, will donate over 5,200 eye screening exams and preventative pet health reports to qualified service dogs across the United States and Canada. Please check back mid-February for details for the public, general practitioners and press at that time.
   

ECVO/ESVO/ISVO Annual Meeting and Call for Papers

The 2008 annual meeting of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) and the European Society of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ESVO) will be held in Versailles , France , May 14-18, 2008. The main program will be preceded by a Continuing Education Program on Equine Ophthalmology and Genetics. Seminars on Electroretinography and Optics will be offered on the last day of the meeting. Details on the scientific and social program will follow shortly. Deadline for abstract submission is February 1st, 2008.

 

NAVC Equine Ophthalmology course

May 19-21, 2008

The primary objective of this course in equine ophthalmology is to improve the ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical skills of equine practitioners in order that they can provide higher levels of care to horses with eye problems. This will begin with a review of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of the horse eye. Basic and advanced ophthalmic examination and diagnostic techniques of horses, and the diagnosis and treatment of common ophthalmic dis*orders of horses including, but not limited to, ulcerative keratitis, anterior uveitis, glaucoma, lid and lacrimal disease, ocular neoplasia, and diseases of retina and optic nerve will be covered in detail. Laboratories in how to perform basic and advanced ophthalmic diagnostic procedures including, but not limited to, tonometry, slit lamp, ophthalmoscopy and ocular ultrasound, and surgical techniques for extraocular and corneal diseases including, but not limited to, lavage tube placement, keratectomy, lid lacerations, and conjunctival graft surgery will be taught in hands on laboratory settings.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. How to perform a complete examination of the eye of the horse using basic and advanced instrumentation.

2. Understand the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to equine corneal disease

3. Recognize clinical signs associated with uveitis and how to differentiate uveitis as a clinical entity separate from other primary ocular diseases that are accompanied by secondary uveitis

4. Understand indications for and how to perform basic ophthalmic surgical procedures

European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies

Ophthalmic Surgery Course

June 16-20, 2008

Toulouse, France

This course has been designed specifically for those who have previously attended an ESAVS ophthalmology course.
There will be approximately 30 hours of wet lab with one student per microscopy for the whole week.  The course of instruction will cover advanced eyelid techniques, corneal and glaucoma surgery and there will be instruction in phacoemulsification.

European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies

Ophthalmology I

Veterinary Ophthalmology will be taught during 2 two-week courses, one in 2008 and one in 2009.  Ophthalmology course I 2008 will cover the clinical examination, conditions of the eyelids, conjunctiva, membrana nictitans, lacrimal system, sclera, cornea and uveal tract, neu-rophthalmology, ocular pharmacology and diagnostic imaging.

Ophthalmology course II 2009 will cover orbital disease, the lens, glaucoma, the retina, ocular anaesthesiology and pathology, inherited ocular disease and its control and there will be reference to species other than the dog and cat.  The 2 courses are complementary and linked within 12 months of distance learning.  See www.esavs.net for more information.
