University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the only Veterinary
School in the Netherlands, and part of a larger integrated scientific
body, the ‘Academic Biomedical Cluster’ (for more information see
www.abc.uu.nl). The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is among Europe’s
leaders in veterinary research, patient care and education, and is one of
the few European veterinary schools accredited by the American and
Canadian Veterinary Medical Associations. The
faculty employs approximately 1000 veterinarians, scientists and support
staff. To facilitate coherence and the attainment of ‘critical mass’,
its research functions are coordinated by the Institute of Veterinary
Sciences and the Graduate School of Animal Health.

November 1st, 2007, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of
Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals will have a vacancy for a: RESIDENT
IN OPHTHALMOLOGY Job
description: The
successful candidate will work within the Ophthalmology section of the
Departement of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals. The Department’s
tasks comprise training (veterinary students, PhD students, interns and
residents), research, and patient care at an academic animal hospital, a
large, predominantly referral, clinic. The Department currently employs
about 70 veterinarians and 130 support staff. Yearly, about 13.000
outpatients are examined, and 3000 surgeries are performed.
Internationally, the facilities are highly rated. Your
duties will include: •
Patient-care and related teaching in the area of ophthalmology.
With increasing time in post, the resident will be expected to assume
increasing responsibility and independence; We
are searching for a colleague who: •
Has completed a veterinary degree; •
Has completed an internship of minimally 12 month, or has worked in
a well-equipped Companion animal clinic, under supervision of a
specialist; •
Is able to read and write the Dutch language, or is willing and
able to obtain these abilities in a very limited time. We
offer a full-time position for an initial period of 12 months, with the
possibility of extension to a total of 3 years if progress is
satisfactory. In this period, you will follow a training program that
meets the requirements of the European College of Veterinary
Ophthalmologists (ECVO). This training strongly interrelates with patient
care and training of students of the Department. The
salary is up to €2629 gross per month (Fulltime appointment on scale 10
of the Collaborative Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities),
depending on previous qualifications and experience. In additions, there
are outstanding secondary benefits such as a minimum of 31 days holiday
per year (for a fulltime appointment), an arrangement for study
facilities, and generous contributions to pension, healthcare, childcare
