The Department of Companion Animals and Horses at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna offers a position (starting October 1st, 2008) for a resident in Veterinary Ophthalmology (Supervisor: Prof. Barbara Nell, Dipl. ECVO) The residency program follows the guidelines of and is approved by the European College of Ophthalmology (ECVO). It has a duration of three years and is to provide the prerequisites for subsequent board certification. To partake in this program candidates should have successfully completed studies at an approved European Veterinary School or an equivalent institution in other countries. Applicants must also have completed a one-year rotating internship and have a sufficient knowledge besides English also of the German language to converse with animal owners. High motivation and the ability to integrate in and cooperate with the existing team are mandatory. A postgraduate degree is desirable. The Veterinary Ophthalmology Service offers referral services to practicing veterinarians in Austria. Complete veterinary ophthalmology diagnostic, medical and surgical services are provided for companion animals, farm animals and equine species. Approximately 2200 cases are presented annually to the ophthalmology service. Of these, approximately 75% are small animals, 20% are equine, and the remaining 5% consist of a mixture of farm animals, laboratory animals, exotic animals and avian species.
